Welcome to "Looking
Back, Moving Forward"!
This site was created for an education psychology class at
Bryn Athyn College of the New Church. My goals in creating this web site were to:
1) Compile information about service learning in an easy-to-access format.
2) Create links to useful resources.
3) Raise awareness of the uses of service learning.
4) Creatively shape my personal philosophy by using a variety of resources
including chatting with secondary teachers, textbooks, online resources, journals, videos, and forums dedicated to discussing
service learning.
5) Show how specifically how service learning can be used in teaching history.
Pages featured on this site:
Gives a basic definition of what service learning is, how it is used,
how to identify it in the classroom, and what it is not.
Lists web sites with lesson plans developed to include service learning.
A great place to see how examples of how the concept is applied.
Read about how service learning needs to reflect curriculum objectives
and see more examples of application.
See and hear how universities have used service learning, why their
students recommend its use, and see examples of projects students around the United States have developed.
The Heavenly Doctrines emphasize the importance of use and charity.
In compiling and analyzing these resources I've pulled together my ideas
of how service learning can best be used in the classroom.
All of the Internet web sites I used are included on the pages of this
site, but there are many many books relating to service learning. Here is a list of helpful books looking at service
learning from a variety of perspectives.
